Get all the action at birthday parties.

Taking pictures of kids at a birthday party can be both a fun and challenging experience. Sometimes getting all the action can be difficult. Sure, you get the candles-blowing-out shot, but what else can you do to make the event photo memorable? How about making a “photo shoot” part of the fun?

Set up a place in a more quiet and controlled room, where you could get the children’s undivided attention. A white wall works as the background, instead of the party atmosphere. Light coming from a window could be the natural light source. The picture-taking process was made into an event just as much as “pin the tail on the donkey” or clubbing the piñata.

The challenge is to get the first one going. Start with the birthday celebrant, and when everyone sees how fun that could be, they will all want to do it. Take two shots: one close-up and one of every friend with guest of honor.

When it comes time to send a thank-you note, include a print of both children, as a keepsake for the parents. You can even add a special using the type tools on MailPix.com.

Tips for Taking Successful Party Pictures

  • Get their attention.
  • Be entertaining.
  • Be silly.
  • Talk to them on their level. (You may need to practice this.)
  • Avoid distracting backgrounds.
  • If shooting against a backdrop, the children know they need to stay put in one spot. Hopefully.
  • Get it done fast. Snap, snap, snap; you’ve taken the picture before they know what happened.
